A Few of Our Popular Activities

Why it Works

Outward Bound turns desks and chairs into mountains and lakes. This natural environment has provided the outdoor classroom for over a million young people to benefit from Outward Bound since its foundation in 1941. Quite simply, it is learning that is meaningful, motivational and memorable.

A key element in this process is the Outward Bound instructor... men and women who want to share their passion for people, the outdoors and learning. You will meet some of them on the following pages in our "One minute interviews". At Outward Bound, each instructor is an integral part of the group. You will have one instructor for the duration, rather than different instructors for each activity. Our dedicated instructor will get to know each and every member of the group and have the skills and experience to help them on their journey finding the best within themselves.

Another key feature is the reviewing process. Following every activity, whatever the outcome participants are encouraged to reflect on their own performance and to identify ways to future success. Only through this process will they begin to understand how their actions impact on others. It's an important lesson in life.

Today, education professionals recognise that outdoor adventure makes a significant contribution to the development of young people. Not surprisingly, The Outward Bound Trust was invited to advise the Government on its "Manifesto for Education in the Outdoors" and continues to work with teachers in developing the skills and attributes critical for the challenges facing young people at school and as they enter the world of work. Moreover, there is plenty of evidence that Outward Bound works.
